High handicappers have never had so many great options available to them. The development of game improvement technology in golf clubs over the last 15-20 years has meant that equipment can offer more support than ever before.
Typically, golf clubs designed for high handicappers prioritise forgiveness above all other qualities. High handicap golfers will not find the centre of the clubface as regularly as they would like, meaning a larger margin for error is needed. Drivers and fairway woods will also often have designs to help golfers battling a slice, whilst most clubs include technology to help lessen the punishment of mishits and help to launch the ball higher in the air.
The SIM2 Max has been rebuilt and redesigned for maximum forgiveness and power, which is exactly what any high handicapper wants to hear. TaylorMade says the key to achieving these qualities is in the Forged Ring Construction, bringing together all the vital components and achieving a more stable and forgiving club. A fully carbon crown has saved weight to allow for a massive 24g tungsten weight at the back of the club head, which is 8g tungsten that the SIM Max model. This has created a higher MOI, which translates to a better launch angle and more forgiveness.
The Thru-Slot Speed Pocket and Twist Face technology designed to promote maximum ball speeds both remain from last year’s SIM Max. This technology is also designed to keep ball speeds higher and retain club head stability on off-centre strikes, making sure mishits are not overly punished. The Speed Injection Port also remains, but it has been moved to a singular location on the toe for further improved ball speed and distances. Overall, the SIM2 Max driver makes further improvements from last year’s already excellent model. It is a driver with enough forgiveness for the high handicapper, yet will remain enjoyable to use for almost any golfer.

● Expensive, but it is the same cost as last year’s SIM Max and similar to competitors
The Callaway Epic Max woods have all the traits that high handicappers need when selecting the ideal fairway wood. They are full of technology to create a high launching and long distance shots as well as all the necessary forgiveness for mishits. Including two pieces of A.I. designed technology, Jailbreak Velocity Blades and Flash Face SS21, which combine to produce stability and maximum ball speeds that remain consistent across the clubface. Flash Face Cup technology also remains in the Epic Max from previous models, also designed for improved ball speeds and distance.
A larger club head with a shallow face allows golfers to easily launch the ball high in the air and should provide higher handicappers with more confidence when standing over the golf ball. The Epic Max also comes with interchangeable weights, which is a bonus feature the Epic Speed model does not have. These adjustable weights allow you to choose preference for forgiveness versus lower launch and spin. Despite Callaway listing the Epic Max as an ‘oversized’ club head it is actually smaller than the previous Callaway Maverik Max model. I think it actually sits happily between oversized and standard, which most high handicappers will enjoy.

Not necessarily a club reserved for high handicappers, but the exceptional forgiveness of the PING G425 hybrid makes it a great option nevertheless. PING have been renowned for producing some of the best and most forgiving hybrid clubs for a while now. But, the G425 is possibly their best yet. An added bonus, especially for high handicappers, is that the G425 hybrids go all the way up to a 34-degree loft. High handicappers can usually benefit from replacing their long irons with hybrids and having so many loft options gives great versatility.
PING have come up with their own new term for this hybrid, Spinsistency. Essentially they have improved the consistency of spin across the clubface by modifying the roll profile. This retains the ball speed on off-centre strikes for more distance consistency and stability. A tungsten sole weight increases the MOI to generate a high launch angle as well as improved distance and forgiveness. The clubface itself is made from thin maraging steel and uses Facewrap technology for further increased ball speeds. A three dot alignment feature on the crown allows for easy alignment and a fairly large rounded club head should give the high handicap golfer more confidence when standing over the ball. PING may not have marketed the G425 hybrid towards high handicappers, but I still think that it is the best available on the market.

Cleveland Launcher HB Turbo are a set of hybrid irons. Many of you might immediately screw your nose up at this, but hear me out. Hybrid irons are built to be extremely forgiving, yet fast and powerful. Overall, I think they are just going to make golf more fun for a lot of high handicappers. Surely this should be a winning formula? If high handicap golfers can overcome the stigma of hybrid irons being unfashionable, then these clubs are possibly the best option on the market.
A redesigned HiBore Crown keeps the weight deep at the back of the club for an easy launching high ball flight. Completely hollow construction with internal stabilizing ribs helps to give maximum forgiveness, whilst a turbocharged thin steel face is designed for fast ball speeds for improving distance. Golfers used to traditional cavity back irons will find that these irons will produce quicker club head speed, with faster ball speeds and more spin. Progressive hollow shaping provides a smooth transition down from long to short irons. This ensures forgiveness is kept in the longer irons where high handicappers need it most and also offers a little more feel on the shorter irons. Any high handicappers thinking about purchasing new irons, I suggest you give these a try. They just might surprise you.

The new Mack Daddy CB wedges allow high handicappers to benefit from Callaway’s renowned Mack Daddy technology, but with the additional forgiveness required on both long and short shots. A deep cavity back, thicker topline and slightly larger club head creates a user-friendly design that should inspire confidence in even the most nervy wedge player. Too often do you see a higher handicap golfer using a bladed wedge that just doesn’t suit them. The Mack Daddy CB is the type of wedge that is far more aligned with the qualities a high handicappers are looking for from their wedges.
Callaway’s JAWS groove technology delivers edge sharpness for excellent spin control, with higher lofted wedges also having full-face grooves. Sole grind is probably not a term most high handicappers are familiar with, but Callaway have simplified it for the Mack Daddy CB wedges. Lower lofts have a full wider sole for better turf interaction and higher lofts have additional bounce to make them more forgiving in tricky lies. These game improvement style wedges won’t have the same versatility as a bladed model, but that should not put off a high handicapper.
