Top 5 Laser Rangefinders For Any Budget

Laser rangefinders have become an essential golf accessory for almost every avid golfer. The advancement of technology within golf in recent years has not just been restricted to golf clubs, but bags, shoes, balls and distance measuring devices too.

Gone are the days where golfers had to find the nearest yardage marker and manually pace out the distance, or try to make a best guess based on an outdated yardage book. A laser rangefinder will give you accurate yardages almost immediately after you ping your target, whether that is the flagstick or a hazard.

Golfers will often argue the pros and cons of a laser rangefinder versus a GPS unit (which will be a topic for discussion in another article). However, what a laser rangefinder will give you is quick, convenient and accurate results that any golfer will benefit from.

Upgraded laser rangefinders are constantly being brought out with new features and modern designs. So, it can be hard to know exactly what you are looking for when searching the market. There are now all-singing all-dancing modern laser rangefinders that will cost you the same as a new driver, but if you are on the hunt for a bargain there are still great models under £100.

In this article we will take a look at our top five laser rangefinders to suit any golfer’s budget.

If you are the golfer that always looks for the latest upgrade, then the Nikon Coolshot Pro II Stabilized has probably the most advanced technology of any laser rangefinder currently on the market. Therefore, it is probably unsurprising it is also one of the most expensive, but you certainly get what you pay for here.

A common gripe when it comes to laser rangefinders is the difficulty they have with locking onto a target, especially if you have a slightly shaky hand. To counteract this issue the Coolshot Pro II features innovative stabilising technology. Combined with Dual Locked on Echo and Hyper Read technology, that all come on a clear OLED anti-glare display, this is possibly the easiest to use laser rangefinder available.

There is a slope ‘ID’ mode included for accurate incline/decline adjusted yardages. Whilst an Actual Distance LED indicator is a cool bonus feature, letting your playing partners know you are complying with competition rules. There is also a scan mode that allows you to quickly get real-time measurements of various points in the distance. Overall, if you are after the very best on the market, you will struggle to find better than the Nikon Coolshot Pro II.

Pros:

● Incredibly easy to use, even for those with shaky hands

● Crystal clear visual display

● Comes with all the latest technology and modes you would expect

● Waterproof and fogproof

Cons:

● One of the most expensive laser rangefinders on the market

You might not see professional golfers with laser rangefinders often, as they are not allowed in USGA competitions. However, they all still use them when they are practicing and they will almost always be using a Bushnell device. Bushnell are without doubt the market leaders when it comes to laser rangefinders and are the most trusted brand on Tour for a reason.

The Tour V5 laser rangefinder is simple quality at its best and ideal for golfers that want easy and accurate yardages. It comes with Pinseeker technology, which gives a visual cue and vibration jolt when you lock-on to the flag. The optics are vibrant and defined. Plus, integrated magnetic BITE technology means you can attach it to the side of your trolley for easy access. Golfers that want slope-adjusted readings can upgrade to the V5 Shift model at a bit more cost.

Pros:

● Tour-trusted accuracy

● Simple to use

● Easy to switch between metres and yards

● Optics are clear and bright

Cons:

● Not waterproof

● Might be better value for money from smaller brands

Every golfer knows and trusts the performance of Callaway equipment, but this can also be extended to their rangefinders. The 300 Pro laser rangefinder delivers all the technology and reliability you would expect from a Callaway product.

The most recent 2021 upgrade of the 300 Pro includes Pin Acquisition Technology, which features a pulse vibration to confirm when you lock onto the flag. Older models gave an audible bird chirp instead, which users could find annoying after a while. The 300 Pro comes with slope adjusted distances that can be easily switched off/on for competitive use. Also new for the 2021 model is Magnahold, a powerful integrated magnet. This allows you to attach the device to the side of your cart for easy access. The Callaway 300 Pro has all the technology the majority of club golfers need and is competitively priced at the lower-end of the rangefinder market.

Pros:

● Pulse vibration is a big upgrade on previous chirp noise in old models

● Waterproof and fogproof, which is not a given at this price

● Slope technology works well and is easy to turn off

● Magnahold is a nice bonus feature

● Reliable accuracy and range of up to 1,000 yards

Cons:

● Lightweight design could hamper golfers without a steady hand

● Can be hard for UK golfers to find

The Golf Buddy Laser Lite manages to feature all the technology you look for in a rangefinder, but at a much more budget friendly price. You will get fast and accurate readings, a clear LCD display and a compact modern design.

You can choose between three different modes when using the Laser Lite. The normal mode allows you to ‘point and shoot’ at any object, the scan mode will pick up multiple yardages for a ten-second period and pin mode activates vibration feedback when you lock onto the flag. Also, slope adjusted distances can be switched off/one easily with the push of a button.

Given the price point, it is an impressive list of technology offered in the Golf Buddy Laser Lite. Distance measurements only take 0.5 seconds, there is a range of up to 800 yards and it has a 6x magnificent lens. You will also be able to use it in light rain because it has IPX4 splash-proof protection.

Pros:

● Amazing value for money

● Three different modes to choose from (also see cons)

● Easy to turn slope technology off for competitions

● Splash proof protection is a useful bonus for winter golfers

Cons:

● Having three modes may be a bit much for most golfers

● Golfers with a shaky hand may find it a little too lightweight

Looking for a budget rangefinder under £100? Then the PeakPulse 6S is one of the best you will find. Significantly cheaper than the market leading brands, the 6S still features an array of features, with impressive optics and good accuracy.

It comes with flag-lock vibration technology, so you know when you have located the flag. The eyepiece has a Fast Focus System designed to provide a focused field of view. Plus, if you want slope adjusted yardages then you can purchase the 6 PRO model, which only costs £10 more.

You can lock onto flags up to 300 yards, which is more than enough range for most golfers and the 6x magnification is what you would expect. It has a simple modern appearance, but the overall build quality does feel a little lower than a more premium product. But given the cost, the PeakPulse 6S will be the perfect laser rangefinder for any beginner or budget-hunting golfer.

Pros:

● Vibration technology at this cost is excellent

● Good accuracy on distances and simple to use

● Will power off after 8 seconds to help save battery power

● Value for money is exceptional compared with premium brands

Cons:

● Not waterproof

● Durability of casing may not be as good as more expensive options
