While many of the golf clubs in our top-100 list have two great layouts that are difficult to separate in terms of quality, Woburn goes one better by having three. But almost uniquely, in Woburn’s case it is the newest course that is widely regarded as the best. The Marquess layout was only opened in 2000 and the fact that it relegates the Duke’s and Duchess’ courses to second best is all the indication you should need of its pedigree and excellence. And if you do require further proof, the year after it opened it hosted the European Tour’s British Masters, which was switched from the Duke’s. Initially it may seem an easier layout to play, featuring wider fairways and more generous landing areas but the real test comes on the greens – often sloping, with two or more tiers and full of both subtle and blatant borrows – and if you avoid three-putting you will have had an excellent day.
