Alderburgh is probably one of the most under-rated, or least talked about, great golf courses in the UK and yet it almost certainly has the best turf you will ever walk upon and is always in superb condition, having never to resort to temporary tees and greens or preferred lies. Despite being built on sandy heathland, it has the feel of a links course and the ever-present gorse lining the fairways is to be avoided at all costs. Founded in 1884, it is the second oldest heathland course in the UK and from the outset has regarded men and women as of equal standing – one of the reasons, perhaps, why the club has hosted the English Women’s Amateur five different times. The course has had many designers over the years, including Willie Fernie, Willie Park Jr, JH Taylor and Harry Colt – three Open champions and one of the greatest architects who ever lived. Aldeburgh is a two-ball course and also promotes foursomes (alternate shot) play, so the consolation, if you’re having a bad day, is that at least it will be over quickly.   52nd Best UK Golf Course Aldeburgh Golf Club has a proud and hospitable heritage and an innate love for its eighteen-hole course which ranks amongst Golf World’s top 100.  Stories of golfing adventures abound in the clubhouse, but the members reserve a warm welcome for visitors and a keen ear for new myths and legends and tales of ‘the one that got away’. The challenging18-hole course is maintained and presented in fine condition, with the added bonus of superb views across the River Alde to Iken Church on the southern bank and, across from it, a line of pine trees silhouetted against the water, known locally as ‘Little Japan’.  It is breathtaking at any time of day, but particularly so as the sun begins to set in the wide skies of East Anglia behind the church.  In the other direction, coastal shipping can be spied from the higher spots on the first nine.  Given the chance to play a splendid course in these surroundings, who can afford to miss it?  Certainly not the player who also knows that the back nine has its own version of ‘Amen Corner’ and brings the successful golfer home glowing with satisfaction
