Our review Situated on a magnificent stretch of north-west golfing coastline that also includes Formby, Hesketh, Hillside, Southport & Ainsdale, Birkdale is one of only four English courses currently on the Open Championship rota. And two of the others, Royal Lytham and St Annes and Royal Liverpool are in close proximity (the other is Royal St George’s, in Kent). Birkdale has hosted the Open nine times and, alongside Lytham, stages the championship more often than any other venue apart from St Andrews – a testament to its quality. It also has the reputation of producing great champions – Peter Thomson (twice), Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Johnny Miller and Tom Watson have all lifted the claret jug at Birkdale. No two consecutive holes face in the same direction so the challenge of the course is almost always enhanced by the capricious wind. Mulligan+ Review Royal Birkdale -The Championship. Though a relative newcomer to the Open Championship rota, only hosting its first Open in 1954, Royal Birkdale is regarded by many to be the finest championship venue of all. And in order to get an idea of the stature of the course, one only has to look at the events that have been staged there. Eight Open Championships, two Ryder Cups, the Walker Cup, the Curtis Cup and countless major amateur events have all been played over the hallowed turf of Royal Birkdale. Royal Birkdale was create back in 1889 by a group of eight golfers and by the end of the century it had been turned into an eighteen hole golf course.J. H. Taylor, the five-time Open Championship and Charles Hawtree then joined forces in the 1930’s to create most of what we know today. In 1991 – 1998, the greens underwent a redesign which benefited the course. Today, Royal Birkdale is one of the great golf courses with each hole testing every shot, club choice and nerve. While it may be tough, it’s a very fair course with pit bunkers running down either side of the tight cut fairways.
